John Neumeier’s narrative dramatic ballet. A normal world, or insanity? Realistic expectations, or dreams that can’t come true? The heroes of the psychological drama A Streetcar Named Desire crave life, yet are thwarted by obstacles without and within. Sensitivity collides with brutality, vulnerability is considered weakness, and it would seem the next stop is the end station. Only desire for love remains… A Streetcar Named Desire is a profound psychological story set in the South of the United States that follows the lives of Stella, her husband Stanley and her sister Blanche. This play has become one of the classics of American drama. John Neumeier was inspired by the story and created the ballet, which was first performed in 1983. The Czech National Ballet production, performed at the Estates Theatre, confirms that the company has continued to pursue its intention to stage significant narrative ballets inspired by classical literary works. In recent years, its repertoire has been extended to include the choreographies Kafka: The Trial and Leonce & Lena.
